YEAR 3 WEEK 2 – Chasing lost time

Following on from last week I’m still trying to finish the concept. The part that is holding me back now is the saw motor, how it will look and trying to show how it will fit around the drum mag. My tutor pointed out to me as well, that I need to think about how all these different parts are being held together.

I was told that I need to start modelling on the Monday to make up for lost time from spending too much time on the concept.

I modelled the shotgun first as I had the most references for this part. It also help to model this part first as it was the centre of the object and all the other parts would then be add onto the gun.

Tried to model shotgun pump handle found it a little trick to model, so moved onto the drum mag. After the drum mag was done I tried to go back to the shotgun pump handle but still finding it a little hard to look right. I decide to leave it and move onto the saw motor. This I found to be harder to model then the pump handle because I really had nothing to help me I was working in the blind and trying to rush to try and make up for lost time.

Doing this put me behind more. At the end of the week I only had the shotgun and drum mag done and with only a week left I was told that it would be a good idea to take away some parts of the gun to get myself back on track for the deadline of next week but I still need the saw motor.

To make sure I tried to not waste any more time on the saw motor. I stop and think more about how it could work and I came up with the idea of a chainsaw that is link to the saw blade and that is how it would spin. I made a quick moodboard of chainsaws and used the motor off one of them. With all the new reference I was able to model that look like a motor.

This week I’ve keep trying to just rush into modelling more hard and complex models without think about how I should be really doing them. This has made me waste time when I had no time to waste in the first place. In the future I need to stop and think more and if have to take a step back or 2

YEAR 3 WEEK 1 – The end to the beginning

I have made it to my 3rd and final year on game art design. As happy as I am about this I’m also very terrified of what comes after this year. I’m still not %100 sure where or what I want to do but hopefully this year I can finally work that out.

The first project of the year is the style matrix. This project is to help expand my different style of work to show I can adapt to different art styles well, this making me look better for hiring. It’s made up of 3 Briefs and each one ill work on for 3 weeks then move onto the next one.  This project also allows me to pick the area that I feel that are my strongest and the areas that I would like to work in the games industry. This helps build up my portfolio.

For my 3 areas I have decided to pick…

Realistic – Environment

Partially stylised – Prop

Highly stylised – Environment

I have picked these 3 because I’ve always been thinking about being an environment artist. That is why I have picked the 2 environments, so why have I pick a prop? This is because I’m thinking about being a weapon designer as well. This idea has come from 2nd year because of the sentry gun project, as I found this project the most fun to do as well keep myself very well motivated, I’m also an airsoft player and I see a lot different types of gun. This could let me have very easy access to good reference. As a lot of the gun used in airsoft are 1 to 1 of the real thing. The partially stylised prop brief is about guns and would be a good to add to my portfolio if I want to be a weapon designer.

I have decided to start with the partially stylised prop as my first brief. For this brief I have been give incomplete concepts of some different guns. I need to pick one and quickly fix the concept, to make it more practical and then make a model of the gun.

I started by picking a gun at random. I number the guns from 1-6 I then used a random number generator to pick a number for me. It pick number 6.

I started to look at this gun to find all the problems with it. I made a note of each on and made a list of ideas to fixes these problems.

I collect reference images and made moodboards.

I now made a new concept of the gun with the fixes.

I also started to try and show what the gun would look like from different sides. I found this part to be a bit harder because of the saw motor I could not find any references to it or anything that was close to it. So I was finding it hard to get an idea of how that part could look.
